I have tried several vacuums in my day, Hoovers, eureka, Rainbow and others. They all died or didn't work very well. I finally bucked up and bought a Dyson. I will never have another vacuum. It is really amazing. I know it's not very reasonably priced but I have two dogs who shed on a regular basis. This is the only vacuum I've ever had that works so well. If there is anyway you can try and afford it I highly recommend it. I got the DC14 Animal but I know if you watch the ads you can get the DC7 with a coupon for around $200. I have medium and think pile carpets (cut Buber almost shag). I also have alergen asthma and with the Hepa filter and other filtering techniques this and the Rainbow were the only ones that I used that didn't make me have a reaction.

Eureka has never been much good. There are inherent flaws in theirs. You will not find a reasonably priced one that performs well unless it is used. None of them, other than a Dyson, actually holds its suction for long. One way I have gotten good results is with an ordinary wet\dry shop vacuum (any brand will do, the name brands you pay extra for) remove the paper filter, and fill the bottom fourth or so of the canister with water. not having the paper filter on it keeps it pulling all the time, and the water catches the dust and debris. be sure to keep the water changed. I discovered this by accident, well...after an accident you might say, when i had to vacuum up liquid, then forgot about the liquid and started vacuuming floors. It is the same principle as what they use on a rainbow brand machine.

for sheer durability, you cannot beat an OLD Kirby, but the way they sell the new ones is an out and out scam that scams not only the buyer but the sales person.

If and when you can get the Dyson, do so, you won't regret it.

DYSON Luxury bagless vacuum.Dyson’s cyclonic suction technology is said to be setting new standards for vacuum performance. In testing, however, Dyson's ratings and reviews by experts aren’t much above average. British consumer magazine Which? cites Dyson for poor long-term reliability, but U.S. owners don't generally express the same frustration. The DC07 vacuum cleaner comes in four versions, but the Animal gets the preponderance of raves, mainly from formerly frustrated pet owners claiming that the Animal's pet-hair tool works wonders less expensive HOOVER (*est. $100) >> Where to buy Budget bagless vacuum cleaner.Bagless vacuums collect dust in a removable bin. While that saves you from buying replacement dust bags, bagless vacuum cleaners do expose you to dust during emptying. The Hoover EmPower gets top marks from experts and a growing number of owners as a great value. The EmPower includes a pet-hair cleaning tool, five height settings, a fold-down handle and HEPA filter. Durability, though, has been an issue for a few owners, and some say it’s not as quiet as it claims to be. For the money, however, most owners say the EmPower vacuum cleaner is a good value.

Most vacuums lose effiency from dirt clogging them. If yours has a paper filter wash it and let it dry. Or just replace it(expensive on a regular basis) My old Phantom worked for years from my practice of removing the HEPA and washing it (even tho they said not to) My cheapo Kenmore now works great for 2 years because every other time I use it I wash the paper filter in the canister. (it was on sale for 55 dollars)
