The text was written by Mallanaga Vātsyāyana an Indian philosopher. Its pretty much a summary of various earlier works.

Kama stands for desire in sanskrit (language original text was in) and Sutra means thread or what pretty much every technical text is called in sanskrit.

There is a site in India, Khajuraho in the State of Madhya Pradesh.
The temples have erotica carved out in stone. . .Kamasutra in stone of any and all positions of the body. I have been to the site, it is a display of unhampered sexual expression. It is believed to be gratification of the baser instincts and it is a way to transcend the evils of the world and achieve enlightenment, a quest for nirvana. Do a search of Khajuraho erotica

Start with the book, get it from the library. It is about tantric sex and varied positions. The illustrations are beautiful but erotic.
