Has anyone ever filed married with their spouse online but forgot a w2 and went and filed it seperately as single? If so what was the result? Was both returns accepted?

That breaks federal law. I'm sure it has been done. You can ask them...in the local prison. And even if you don't get audited, they ALWAYS check for W2s. By filing seperately as single, you would be claiming the standard deduction (which you already claimed on your other return) and getting more back than what you are legally entitled to. I'd check with a tax preparer and check to see what you could do to include that w2 with the original return.

You cannot file more than one federal tax return. You have to correct the one you filed as a joint return. You're going to get a letter back from the IRS likely rejecting both forms. You may even get audited *crossing my fingers for you against that one, lol*

Each person is only allowed one personal exemption, and each person or married couple is allowed one standard deduction, the amount of which depends on whether filing jointly or separately.

From IRS FAQ's on W-2's:

I have already filed my return and now I have received another Form W-2. What can I do?

If you find that you have done any of the following, you should file an amended return 1) you did not report some income; 2) you claimed deductions or credits you should not have claimed; 3) you failed to claim some deductions or credits you are entitled to; or 4) you used an incorrect filing status. The form you use to correct the Form 1040 (PDF), Form 1040A (PDF), or Form 1040EZ (PDF), you already filed is Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Please refer to Tax Topic 308, Amended Returns, for additional information.

The 2nd return would not be accepted. If you omit a W2, you must file an amended return on Form 1040X

You have to file an amended X return for that year.
