I must admit, I have yet to give up "bless you" as a response to a sneeze. I was saying it for 40 years before I admitted to my atheism and a 40 year habit is hard to break.
I have an atheist friend who says, "ged-knee-onya" ("get any on ya" said really fast) which I really like because when said properly, it just sounds like another language and people respond with a big smile and a thank you, thinking you've said something foreign. LOL!

Nothing at all. Bless you is a piece of a superstitious past that just refuses to go away, like a little ball of styrofoam that clings to your hands and clothes no matter how much you try to shake it off. It started from something spiritual and developed into a misguided interpretation of manners, and it's time we started the anti-bless-you sneeze revolution!

I'm not atheist but I also don't say God Bless You. I normally just say bless you or bessyou, if I'm being cute. It's just the customary thing to say when someone sneezes.

Good question. I personally don't say anything, as it serves no purpose whatsoever other than to pay homage to and perpetuate an ancient superstition, but I've heard other nontheists say "Bless you" or "Gesundheit." It's a cultural thing. Most people who knock on wood don't think about the origins of the practice, either.

I say bless you (but not “god bless you”) because it’s polite and because it can simply mean to glorify or praise or to express favor. I know many atheists wouldn’t say it and I understand, given the implications, but I do. I live in the bible belt and not saying it is a bad social no no.
What does it really matter though?

I say, "Do you need a tissue?"
I have to wonder why godbots stand around spewing their tripe instead of doing something purposeful for the person who sneezed.

It IS dusty in here...
Is my aftershave bothering you?
Or, in the pagan tradition of evil spirits causing illness.. bless you.
