A system engineer usually coordinates the operation of *many* pieces of software as a whole scenario, whereas a software engineer may focus on a single piece of software at a time. Thus a system engineer may seem to receive higher status (and pay) for a higher and complex view of a computer's "state of mind" and thought *patterns* whereas a software engineer focuses on a computer's single "thought-at-a-time".

Usually software engineers are paid a little better than IT engineers, but I think that companies should treat both with equal status. And many do.
