I support children learning about reading, writing, mathematics and science. I also support a social studies class that contains chapters on each of the world's religious and an attempt to explain why people believe deities.
I know it would never fly, though, so I do not want anything religious taught in schools.

Being Christian I want people to know about God, I just have one problem with the public school scenario, there are other religions and non religions in the public school system and they'll want their beliefs taught too.
Right now the public school system wants to wipe out anything Christian and let every other religion or non religion be taught and pushed on those of us who don't want it. Christian kids are sent home for wearing crosses and Jesus t-shirts but Muslim kids can wear their religious clothing, I've a HUGE problem with that.
This is why many Christians have taken to home schooling their children if they can't afford to send them to private Christian schools.
I say don't force the kids that don't want to learn about religion and allow the children who do want to learn, learn.

No, that's what Sunday school is for.
Or they can wait til they get to college and take a religion class.
It would just lead to more intolerance starting at a young age.
Because to be fair, they'd have to have a Christian "club" an Islam "club", one for Jews, Hindus, pagans, and one to accommodate whoever else has a belief in God. Where would the atheist, and agnostics go? Study hall?
Public school is for learning about History, Literature, Sciences, etc. Christians should be asking themselves why the school wont allow kids to take art, music, and choir as electives. These are very important parts to life as well.

Personally, does it matter? The school system is a joke nowadays, as well as education. (Think of this: Oprah spent about 4 million on a school in Africa. AFRICA. There, since they're poor, it means something. If she would have done that here, she'd be wasting money.) Since when did education become about guns in lockers or knives hidden on the student? I thought it was about LEARNING. And FACT: When I was in high-school, we had porcelain plates, not plastic. And teachers do not TEACH the WHOLE CLASS. They have favorites now. The ones that are hard headed are just sent through the system because they figure education is wasted on them. I just glad I'm not young anymore. Especially in todays educational system where the student rules the teacher.

Children should not be forced to learn a religion. THey are too young to be able to decide something as important as a religion. Also I beleive kids should learn things like math writing, science ect in school. The rest is for bible study

personally i would prefer the bible and religion to be taught in churches and i understand why non-believers would not want to be forced to learn about god in their schools. but that is not happening so its really a non-issue. although i am not against a moment of silence to start each day of school for children...they can meditate, prayer or just prepare mentally for the day during that time. i do think however that basic behaviors should be taught at school....basically the golden rule and such, our children desperately need to be taught morals and consequences of bad behavior and rewarded for good behavior but that can be done in a secular environment too. (if you had to have a label to my beliefs it would be 'christian' but i view myself as a believer rather than a certain denomination)

SUNDAY SCHOOL is for learning about religion. Monday through Friday should be spent learning about the fundamentals and skills needed to be a successful contributor to society. I have no problem with creationism being taught as a THEORY alongside evolution as a theory, but religious education belongs in church.

God and the Bible do not belong in school. The purpose of school is to educate children to survive in reality with knowledge of the world as we see it. To teach the bible only teaches them to be afraid of sinning, and to only live for a deity. It has no purpose as an educational practice. Knowing god and the bible will never halp put food on the table, a house over your head. It will only give children a closed mind against all the wonderful oppurtunities that exist in the realistic world.

No, it is very bad. One of the original tenets of democracy in the US is separation of church and state. If you want your children to learn theology, send them to Sunday school or to a private religious institution.
Teaching about religions isn't so bad, as long as all religions are treated equally and without the teacher's personal bias.
Think about the incompatibility: forcing kids to learn about the Bible and god in school is like having people in church preaching about science and evolution.
