Baptism is an outward show of an inward change. Baptism celebrates the fact that our old self is buried with Christ and raised to new life. This is why Baptists practice total immersion baptism.

Nowhere in the Bible does it teach infant baptism. After you believe on Christ, you are baptized to show what has happened in your heart. An infant is not able to make that decision yet.

Baptism DOES NOT save you. You could be baptized in every body of water from here to China, and if there has not been a change in your heart, you are not saved. Baptism should be the first act of obedience a Christian does after they are saved. We do it to show publicly that we commit ourselves to Christ.

-what happens in the baptism -- I don't know that any special graces are imparted. This is simply a statement of faith for full membership in the church.

- why do they believe in adult baptism -- Baptists believe that a decision must be made first, then baptism follows, although it is not absolutely necessary for salvation. Since infants cannot physically do this, they believe in an "age of reason" where infants are not held accountable and therefore go to heaven if they die prior to that age.

- why don't they believe in infant baptism? They do not believe in covenant theology and do not recognize it as a replacement for Old Testament circumcision. It is simply an ordinance and a commandment of Christ to be followed. Unfortunately, the fact that the Bible doesn't mention infant baptism anywhere in the Bible is a rather silly argument for a "believers baptism". If scriptural silence is to be used as an argument, then they would also have to accept the fact that it is nowhere forbidden!

I am Baptist and was baptized by full immersion as an adult. One must make a decision to follow Christ before Baptism. No where in scripture does it speak of infant baptism. Full immersion identifies being raised with Christ to new life; being buried and raised with Christ; leaving the old life behind; regeneration. Most Baptist churches will ask for you to be baptized before becoming a member. Baptism in no way saves you. You are saved by faith.

Well, I am not baptist, but the reason I (Non-Denominational) do not believe in infant baptism is for 2 reasons. #1 - Not in the bible anywhere.
#2 - Jesus said that baptism is an outward expression of our faith in him. It is to show the world your committment. It is a choice you have to make. (An adult is able to both make the choice to follow Jesus, and also to make the choice to publically announce it through baptism)

You are submerged in water briefly (usually by a minister). John the Baptist , Jesus Cousin is known for coining baptism in the bible. It signifies "the washing away of sins." Baptists believe children are born without sin, so there is no need for baptism.
