You could spend your whole life theorising, but in truth, there's only one way to find out. Unfortunately, there's a chance that it's a one way trip.

The tried and tested solution to this question can only be found through personal experience. Be you Christian, Muslim, Jew or of some other persuasion, we are all bound by death. Everyone dies, reguardless of the beliefs you follow. If we were to take people of no fixed faith as an example of what the psyche instinctively seeks in the absence of religious guidelines, generally speaking, the brain will seek the most logical solution (e.g. poof, dead and buried, fade to black) where as the heart will opt for something more comforting (fluffy clouds, family members, funny little wings). So you have to ask yourself, what has more authority in this field, thought or feeling? I can't answer that question for you :)
Of course, you have to factor religion into the equation. The Bible says that there is no redemption for those who are banished to hell, but each dogma has its own afterlife and whether you choose to believe it or not is largely up to you. I won't go into this because, as an Athiest, I don't really have any right to.
I guess the most sane thing to do would be to just stop worrying about it, but for a species that is always striving for answers, that's very unsatisfying.

According to Catholic dogma Hell is real, everlasting and it is suffering a punishment for eternity with no relief. Some have argued why would God who is so loving pronounce a judgement that would send us to hell? While He is a God of love He is also a God of Justice and whoever has cast away His loving calls while alive to repent and convert will have to face an eternity banished from His presence. We have enough time while alive to amend our ways. We have been warned of the existence of Hell. Whoever resists God's call, continues to sin and goes around doing his own thing, showing contempt at God's Mercy while alive, will face God's Justice after death. Difficult truth to swallow.
The following books will help you understand the dogma of Hell if you are interested.

Dont worry too much - the only people i know that would get in to heaven are precisely the people i wouldnt want to spend eternity with anyway. Everlasting punishment is likely to involve dirty tequilas in a dirtier bar surrounded by sin of all flavours. I reckon youll go to hell and love it.

To many people, the idea of eternal damnation has always stood as a most unreasonable proposition in the teaching of Lord Jesus Christ. It is incomprehensible to them how the Lord can give frail man a single chance to choose his way, and then cast him forever into hell. Modified by the principles of reincarnation, however, the prophecy of the gnashing of teeth takes on new meaning. Here is Lord Krishna on this subject :

Given over to self-conceit, force and pride,
And also to lust and anger,
These malicious people despise Me,
Dwelling in the body of themselves and others.
These cruel haters, worst of men—
I hurl these evil-doers only into
The wombs of demons
In this round of births and deaths.
(Gita, 16.18-19)
One may go to hell but is not forever, the ultimate destiny in the long journey of the soul, is to be eternally in association with God.

Yes, it will be everlasting. It's never too late to be saved from it either. If you choose to worship the Almighty Jesus Christ as your Savior and king then He'll give you eternal peace in the Kingdom of Heaven.

everlasting.
never ending.
infinite.
an unending life sentence for your soul.
and, my friend, I wish I had a dollar for everyone who ever said "it is too late for me to be saved".....
God loves you unconditionally....
just as you are.....
in the spiritual condition you are in....
you severely underestimate the power
of God Almighty.
do you think He is sufficient to move mountains, create universes, raise folks from the dead, defeat Satan and His minions but would not be able to save your soul?
how very foolish of you.
my God can do anything!!
open your heart.
it is never too late.
John 3: The Words of Jesus Christ (God in the flesh)
3. "Verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God."
4. Nicodemus saith unto Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?"
5. Jesus answered, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God."
6. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
16. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18. He that believeth on Him is not condemned; but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
