I speak from personal experince.
I had a stroke 4 yrs ago, I needed a wheelchair, and then a walker. I threw the walker I had at home away,as I dont need it anymore.(I didnt donate it because it was in bad condition) I had another one here, where Im doing a seminar on computers (crete)
Its not even mine, it belongs to the instition here, and since I dont need it, it sits quietly in a corner.
yesterday, someone was playing with it, and it really upset me.
this is confusing, as I have never been a "dont touch my stuff" kind of person. And its not even mine!
I talked to other people in wheelchairs and with crutches, and they feel the same way.
Its like someone touching your private parts!
can you explain this, please?

Wheelchairs fill a very special niche. It is like combining a car, your own legs, and your clothing in one thing. You really shared a very intimate relationship with it.

In a very real sense, it was a part of your body and identity.

I am a wheelchair tech in a place where most of the residents use manual or power chairs, and I have seen this over and over.

At the same time, most people resent or hate the chair a little as well- it limits them, it seperates them from other people, and it marks them as a member of a group very visibly. Most chair users treat their chair with a sort of 'casual abuse' that is very much at odds with how attached they are to it.
