If you don't want to buy and install a DVD player/writer for your computer, you can copy the *.vob files from your DVD handycam to your computer using a USB2 connection. Then you can play the videos (*.vob files) using Windows Media Player.

You don't need to download free software. Provided you have a firewire connection (or are prepared to install a card), you can use Windows Movie Maker to download direct from the camcorder.
