I'm posting this in R&S because I figure a lot of church goers are here - and might be able to provide an answer.

Every six months we do something to thank our volunteers. We've put on a couple of ice cream socials. And we've also given away little trinkets (the last was an Angel Coin). Our budget only allows for about $250.00 - and there will be anywhere from 50 to 100 people attending - so it's hard. The ice cream socials have worked well - but we were hoping to do something new. The next event will be in August - and we can either do it in a park - or in space at the church. Any suggestions? If you have hosted this kind of thing - what have you done?

Just another note that our church puts on a very fancy dinner/dance event for anybody who tithes regularly. So we're not cheap when it comes to honoring folks. The volunteer recognition is new - and give aways have been more of a token of recognition.

Why not celebrate your Christian heritage?

How about a good old fashioned stoning. After a little torture I'm sure you could get them to confess to being a witch or something.

"Just another note that our church puts on a very fancy dinner/dance event for anybody who tithes regularly. "

are you saying that those who gives a lot of money is honored??? tithing is a moment between that person and God. i think any church who does this is not a church. church is about spreading God's message and being a family. and to answer your question a nice thank you card to the volunteers is all that is needed. start using this money for study materials, and spreading Good news or how about giving it to the poor. the volunteers will get their reward from God.Praise Jesus's name and remember why He came.

You could print up some certificates of appreciation (that wouldn't cost very much) and/or print up an article in a church newsletter for recognition. How about a potluck type ceremony? Have everyone bring a dish and a drink to share, and give them a certificate of appreciation? Then, take the leftover money, and donate to one of your missionaries on their behalf.

I do volunteer work restoring wildlife habitat. Really good food being available after you're done working is awesome. It's not quite the same, because this is out in the wilderness and after physical labor, but still -- it's all about the food.

Take them to an amusement Park or have an informal dinner. Buy them a small token of the churches appreciation.

It's so bizarre. They serve God for what God has given to them and their thanksfullness to Him. No need fancy dinner/dance event for it. If it is for motivation, we must thinking about what is their real motivation behind their volunteering.

DOnt mess up between volunteering and serving God. This thing will make people serve God because of another motivation. A BIG DONT!!!!!

volunteerism is it's own reward. Don't encourage them to expect anything else, or you will breed a new kind of volunteer.
