What is the particular law in your area?

I know locally, a young woman can leave an infant at the fire department or hospital and not face charges of abandonment.

However, if I understand this case correctly, this particular woman left the child out in the cold, right? Well, even if local laws a woman to abandon her newborn with a health or safety professional, I think this woman went about it the wrong way. The poor infant could have frozen to death. So, I would say at minimum "Child Endangerment", plus whatever abandonment laws apply.

I say she needs counceling. I give her credit for not leaving it in a plastic bag, garbage can, keeping the baby and putting the child through mental, emotional, physical abuse, torturing the baby, killing the baby, and all the other cruel things people do to babies when then decide one day they don't want it anymore. Something in her head told her she did'nt want the baby and she did'nt harm the baby she left the baby for someone else to care for so this child perhapse could enjoy a better life. She did'nt come up with excuses like some of the crazy women who said either god or the devil told them to kill there child. I'm nobody to judge but I think she did'nt break the law she left the baby at a nurses doorstep of all people at least it wasn't a drug house, or a pedophiler doorstep she deserves a second chance. Counceling and perhaps her tubes tied to prevent another pregnancy if counceling doesn't work.

I think she needs counselling. What is jail going to do? Is this the one that left the child outside in the cold? Ok that was wrong but at least she left it for someone to find, not in a garbage bin, or even worse. People who get pregnant should have the option of just passing the baby over to the hospital if they don't want to raise the child. I know its their responsibility but I mean I would rather someone adopt a child that was a mistake, or unwanted. And if the parent knows they can't raise it, and afraid to tell people then at least they are doing the best thing, giving it up for someone else to love. This person made a mistake but sometimes it takes these mistakes to give a childless family their dream.

I think that she did a horrible thing by just leaving her baby on a doorstep! She should be charged with abandonment and reckless endangerment and severly punished for it. If she didn't want the baby she could have put it up for adoption, called child protective services to come and get it, left it at a hospital, etc... She didn't have to leave the poor thing outside in the weather in the middle of winter!! She's going to get the sh*t beat out of her in prison! There are lots of mothers in the prisons that would love to get to see and hold their kids so they're not going to take it easy on the woman who just tossed her baby on someones doorstep!

She did the right thing. It was a heck of alot better than finding the child in the trash. How old was the child? Why did the mother do it? Was she a drug addict, could she not handle being a mother.. She could have done worse, like killing the child or leaving alone in a place where nobody could find them. I do not agree with the fact that she left the child, but it is comforting to know that she left them alive.

They have a law now in alot of states Im not sure what the name of it is but its like a no questions asked thing. a mother can leave there child at a hospital, fire dept, police dept, ect. and know questions will be asked and no charges will be filed. I 100% agree w/ this law, It will avoid so much child abuse and cild abandonment issues and gives the child a chance at a better life, as far as just leaving a child on someones door step, The parent or person should be charged acordingly.

In the US, we have laws in most states that cover this. If the mother leaves a child at a hospital, police, or something similar, she cannot be charged, and gives up her parental rights.

The idea is that we would rather see a child given up for adoption like this than see them left in dumpsters to die.

I don't think she should get any.... she left her baby at a home where she knew someone was home, and the wife was an RN. She knew her baby would be okay, and probably waited to make sure she was found. The baby is fine and healthy.

Don't forget... this woman was very post-partum... labour and deliver don't exactly leave you in the right state of mind. She was probably young and scared too.

Maybe we should have something in Canada like they do in the States... I forget what it's called, but if you don't want your baby you can leave it at a hospital of firehall, no questions asked.

Lot better than a Dumpster. Here in the USA there are safe haven laws--you can leave your child at certain places such as a fire station if you are unable to care for the child, and you won't be charged.

If her intent was to leave the child with someone who could properly care for him/her, then she shouldn't be charged at all IMO.

It's better than her placing the child in a dumpster like a lot of people do. Here in Washington state it is legal to leave a baby at a hospital, or fire station with no questions asked.
