You should consider changing the cat's diet to a quality canned meat such as Natural Balance, Wellness, Lick Your Chops, Blue, Felidae, Innova Evo etc.
When cats are feed dry food the fillers in them are not readily digestible by the cat. A cat who eats a more "natural" diet (meat mostly) the stomach acids can handle the digestion of the hair the cat gets from grooming itself. When all those unnecessary carbohyrates in those foods are just too much for the cat to digest naturally.

There's a couple things you could do. The first is to go to a pet store or WalMart and buy some Hairball Remedy. It comes in either beef or poultry flavor and you give it to your cat a couple of times a week. It's almost like a gel. Alot of cats actually like to eat it. Or you can use Vaseline petrolum jelly but they don't usually like that as much as the Hairball Remedy because it's not flavored. Another thing to do is brush your cat daily, especially if it's got long hair. And of course, if you have an outdoor cat (which all cats should be kept indoors anyway) it is gonna be harder to take care of it's fur.

There's cat food out there for this situation. The package would come out and say something like easy on hairball or something like that. You would have to look at all of the cat foods that are available and see if any of them would help. If one doesn't work, you should try the next cat food flavor since they all are different, even if they might have the same flavor, but they all work differently on your cat's needs.

What helps for my cats is to all ways have some grass at hand. If this isn't possible try what I do with mine: use some chives. My cats tend to eat this when they feel a hairball coming up and it helps them to get rid of it easier. Mind I have to long haired cats.
Of course, brush them regularly if they allow it, and always feed them quality foods, preferably some that helps them to pass hairballs

Boy that's a rough one!
You might try grooming your kitty to get the loose fur off, including wiping with a damp cloth. I wouldn't suggest bathing: Most cats will fight water, and i still have a couple of scars to prove it!
Also, consult your vet or someone else knowledgeable about a high-quality food so your kitty won't shed so much.
Good luck!

Have you tried actual hairball medication such as laxatone, or petromalt. You can even use household petroleum jelly, as this is the main ingredient in the medications.
