3 men check into a hotel. The clerk charges them 21 dollars. Each man gives seven dollars. Later on, the clerk realizes he over charged them 5 dollars. He calls the bellhop over and instructs him to divide the $5
between the three men. When the bellhop goes up to the room he knows he can't divide the money evenly, so he gives each man a buck and keeps the remaining two for himself. Now, this means each man paid 6 bucks($18) the bellhop kept 2 bucks. That's 20, where is the last dollar?

Each man origianly spent $7 - 3X$7=$21

However the charge was only supposed to be $16

Giving one dollar back means each man only spent $6 - 3X$6-1$8

Money spent is $18 minus $16 for the rooms = $2 for the bellhop.

The riddle is well worded to make you forget that in the second to last sentance "each man paid 6 bucks($18) the bellhop kept 2 bucks" the bellhop's $2 is already part of the 18, not in addition to.

The logic in this riddle is wrong, which is why it came out to 20...

there are 21 bucks, he gives back 5 = 16

16 paid + 3 given back = 19

19 dollars + 2 the bellhop kept = 21

The problem with the riddle is that it said each man paid 18, and the bellhop kept 2, it should be each man paid 18, and got 3 back

There is no extra dollar. each man spent 7, got one back, therefore spent 6. The bellhop has 2. now do the math:
21 spent (3 x 7) - 5 returned = 16
the bellhop now has two, so the 18 dollars are accounted for
because each man spent 7 and got one back.
