Gee, putting something away for college or technical training might not be a bad idea.
That said...
You may not be able to afford insurance on anything fast. Especially if it's new-ish. (I knew a guy in the Air Force, 18 years old, E-1, his ENTIRE PAYCHECK save like 50 bucks going to his payment and insurance. This was with a 2000 Prelude, in 02.)
I'd suggest avoiding anything too boy-racer-ish. No Mustangs or Camaros or Civic Sis or Integras.
I'm 28, but my (full coverage, 250 deductible) insurance for my Miata was about 55 bucks a month. It might be affordable for you, and you can find a good one for like 3-5000 dollars this time of year. It would be faster than your Cavalier, WAY more reliable, and corners better than anything that doesn't cost at least 30 percent more.
Another good one would be a mid-90s Thunderbird or Cougar, or maybe a Lincoln Mark VIII. They're kind of old-man cars, but they've got:
Independent rear suspension. They can handle, and they're really predictable. You can feel what the car is doing (not like a real sports car, but better than most FWD cars), and it will pretty much never surprise you. It loses traction gradually if you push it too far, not all at once. Of course, mine had good tires.
IIRC, 290 ft-lbs of peak torque (210 horsepower). Same engine as the Crown Victoria. (Also a good car, but heavier, with a live-axle rear end.)
Big, comfortable back seat. Nudge nudge, wink wink.
And they're cheap.
Don't even consider a V6, though. It's a terrible engine. Same with the Mustang V6 (same engine, IIRC).
I've not driven the Mark VIII, but it has different heads (runs on premium), air suspension (which is an expensive point of failure) and 80 more horsepower.
The Mazda Protege 5 is a very practical car and is a blast to drive. Might be a little pricey for you though.

that depends solely upon your personal taste in automobiles. If you would've given a choice of cars to pick from this would've been a lot easier.
As far as something "faster" than a cavalier: I thought EVERYTHING was faster than a cavalier. Huge area to explore!
Since speed is prevalent in your decision making process, I would choose the obvious answer of a used 5.0-mustang, Trans-Am, or even used Vette. It depends on your spending limits.
Good luck!
