Hi, my grandfather was a pilot in WW2 (Navy)...When he passed away, they did the 21 gun salute..After they folded the flag, before giving it to my grandmother, they put something inside it?? Almost looked like shell casings?? Does anyone know what it could have been?? Thanks!!

By tradition one shell casing from each volley fire is folded inside the flag.

Three spent rifle shells. I don't know what they signify. Possibly one for each of the three volleys fired for the 21 guns salute.

A lot of sacrifice by your grandfather was put into that flag. I am grateful for his service, and may he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear about your Granfather. Never heard of them putting anything in them. My brothers flag was just tightly folded and given to his wife.If you can get your grandma to let you see it maybe you can feel it with out unfolding it.
