Magen's Bay & Paradise Point in St Thomas? I am going on a Carnival cruise and thought about this as an excursion but would like to know if I could get there on my own for cheaper? (Without paying for the excursion I mean)

Yep, don't book through the cruise line. Get off the ship, head to a taxi and ask him to take you wherever you want to go. He'll pick you up when you ask too.

I'd suggest heading over to St. John on Cinnamon Beach. It's awesome there and won't be so crowded. There's a ferry that will bring you there in about twenty minutes or so.

Bring your own snorkel gear to save money too.

Have fun!

I took a Carnival Cruise last April and did the Magen's Bay excursion. It is cheaper to book the excursion through Carnival instead of on your own as they provide the transportation, plus the tour guide is usually really fun and you get just enough time at the beach! When I took the excursion, they dropped us off so that Paradise Point was only about a 10 minute walk. We didn't book Paradise Point through Carnival but ended up wishing we did because it would have saved us about $7/person.

When you get to the top of Paradise Point, make sure you get a Bushwacker! It'll knock your socks off and you get a cute mug for a souvenir!

I almost always book these type things in an excursion, unless I have been to the area many times and prefer to do it on my own. I've done this type of excursion before and it was a great time. You may be able to book the excursion outside of the cruise line, but be sure you use the company directly and don't go with some other company that could potentially just take your money and not book your excursion. I always stick with the cruise line, or the actual excursion company, or use my travel agent to book it, just to be on the safe side.

I had some friends that went to Paradise Point on their own and they still had a good time. But they did wish that they could have enjoyed the guides as well. It depends on the excursion, but some may limit your time in the area, so you should look into that. You may prefer to get your own transportation back.

Have a great time!
