If you were told the cat has tapeworms by the vet, the vet would have given you medication to take care of it.

Have mom bring a sample of the cat's poop to the vet, they'll let you know what kind of worms the cat has (could have more than one) and then she can get the right medicine for the cat.

Tell mom don't waste her time and money doing something else.

It will not work on a tapeworm and who has diagnosed that this is what the cat has? Your mother needs to be less chintzy when it comes to the cat. Any worming medication is poison and must be used judiciously - and NO dewormer or other medication for dogs is safe with cats.

She can't find the tapeworm stuff for cheap as it is only available through a licensed veterinarian. To use another medication is to risk hurting the cat and it will not get rid of a tapeworm.

can your mom afford $15.00? If not, then you should not own a cat. Do not give dogs meds to a cat, and do not give a wormer not meant for the worms your cat has. All your mom will do it make your cat sicker and you may end up taking the cat into the vet and paying LOTS of money to get him weill because you were irresponsible in giving him the wrong medication. This is the same exact stuff the vet uses...it works and it 's cheap.

Tapeworm meds are expensive, and you have to get them from a vet. There are many OTC worming meds, many of which do not work; and I don't believe there are any OTC treatments for tapeworms. Taking a stool sample to the vet is a good idea, in case the cat has other types of parasites; but, tapeworms are generally not found on a fecal float or other diagnostic test--you know your cat has them when you see moving pieces of "rice" on their fur.

You generally have two options for tapeworm mets: an injection, such as Droncit (Bayer), or a pill, such as Cestex (Pfizer, though there are generics for this). You'll have to get these through your vet.

Tapeworm dewormer is not expensive under $10.00 . Dosage depends on the weight of the cat. You can get it from a vet. Tape worm looks like bits of rice around the cats bum hole.

Don't give your cat meds intended for dogs. Your mom's co-worker is not a qualified vet.

Never use a product designed for dogs on cats. Cats are extremely sensitive to those kinds of things. Things such as over the counter dog flea spray will and can kill a cat! Best to pick up some de wormer at your vet. Last time I had to pick some up it was around $15 for my 50lb dog so it is not that expensive (unless they require an exam and/or fecal first).

No, meds for roundworms and other worms will not work for tapeworms. You need to get the right medication. You also need to use a medication for cats - dogs and cats have different sensitivities to medication and a medication for dogs could be harmful.

Do not and I repeat DO NOT give any kind of medication to a cat that is for dogs unless the package says if for dog AND cats and the proper dosage is on the package. You could seriously hurt or kill a cat with meds meant for a dog. Ask your vet!

You need to call and talk to a vet or something because people can get tapeworms. And you don't want tapeworms, do you?? Contact a vet asap, and ask them what you should do.

Actually, if the cat doesn't mind, tapeworms are good fishing bait if you fish a lot. Just take the cat on the boat with you and give him a little squeeze and dispense a tapeworm - pretty handy really.
