It is very hard to become fluent in a new language but what you're doing is the best thing...immersing yourself. Get out and talk to people and don't worry if they laugh. They are NOT laughing at you. Think about how small children learning to speak talk and how sweet it is. It's very endearing to hear someone using new words but it doesn't mean they are making fun of you (some might but ignore them).

You could look into some groups that could help you or where you could practice your skills. Look at www.meetup.com for your city and find something that interests you. You might even find a group of other Chinese people to talk to and you can all practice English together while still being able to understand each other.

You could also write to people online in chat rooms or something. Whatever you do, practice and keep trying. It will get easier. English is a difficult language and five months is short time.

Best of luck.

Do you have a work permit? The best way to improve your language skills is to get out there and TALK to people. A job is a good way, but if you don't have papers to work and you have time, you could volunteer somewhere, like a church group, humane society, and so forth. Also, if you're there on a foreign exchange or study abroad and you're in college, a lot of schools offer conversation partners for international students.
