I do not think that Chapman was doing his crimes out of religious fervor. I think that he was insane. If he was doing this out of a born again christian role and was following the bible and ridding the world of someone he thought was evil, then why did he ask for an autograph first. Really. Mark David Chapman was the last person that John Lennon gave an autograph to (that we know of). Chapman got the autograph and then a few hours later killed Lennon. Chapman later sued to get the album cover that Lennon signed back but the courts did not let him have it.

Did he say he was?
John Lennon's negative attitude towards people and towards certian things at times is what drove Mark Chapman to kill him.
i.e. If you was being bullied by someone in school or at work every day and your superiors or the school wouldn't do anything about it,would you be driven to the point to where you got sick of it?
I'm not saying to go out and murder the bully, that would be wrong but have you ever gotten to the point where you have taken all that you are going to take and you just opened up on the bully and let him or her have it?
note: just because someone claims to be a born-again Christian that doesn't necessarily mean that they are because saying you are a Christian and walking in faith and living to the will of God are two different things.
Also, people will use the expression"God told me to do it" in attempt of trying to avoid prosecution for doing crimes they alone thought up themselves to do.

Chapman recalls having listened to the Imagine album in the weeks before the murder and stated: "I would listen to this music and I would get angry at him, for saying that he didn't believe in God… and that he didn't believe in the Beatles. This was another thing that angered me, even though this record had been done at least ten years previously. I just wanted to scream out loud, 'Who does he think he is, saying these things about God and heaven and the Beatles?' Saying that he doesn't believe in Jesus and things like that. At that point, my mind was going through a total blackness of anger and rage.

Actually Mark Chapman was mentally ill. He thought he was Holden Caufield from "The Catcher in the Rye".

This shows me the true face Xristianity, and religion. This "I am doing it for god", is the scary part the insanity of religions, and the followers of it. Religion is dangerous. The crusades,jihad,ha-mas, onward Xristian soldiers, as if marching off to war. The war against FREE THINKERS,because they are a danger to the mind enslaving brain washers of the world.
The world is a beautiful place, full of things called the human race. Their life is short, but to the point. It's either learn to shoot straight or roll a joint. More then shooting at flying geese. It is your fellow man you kill for PEACE>
