There is a heating effect that occurs between ground and ice. It will heat the ice near the ground and make a lubricant to help the ice slip. There is a difference between fresh water ice at 32 deg. F and salt water which freezes at 26deg. F.As u can see that the salt water ice stores much Moore cold than fresh water.
