For a $1000 US i would say get the Nikon D50 + the Nikor 18-200VR lens. (OK it will be a little over 1000 but not too much)

The D50 has very good low light, and auto white balance. it also has pretty good performance at a high ISO and the colours are amazing. It;s not 8MP, but a good camera is not all about MP!!!

The 18-200 VR lens if just bloody fantastic. great price, sharp and built in VR (Vibration reduction), for the money easily Nikon's best lens and of course it covers a nice broad zoom range

Umm you know guys that the Nikon D80 is over $1000 bucks on most websites with just the body... Not saying its a bad camera its just not under $1000. Even with that money though the 30D is so much better (for my needs, Fast FPS).

1. The Canon Rebel has amazing pictures that can be used at 1600 ISO. I use it for sports like basketball where its nesscary for high shutter speed in a low amount of light.
2. Low noise in dark spots? Not quite sure what you mean by that
3. Like I said in #1 it does do great with low light situations, you just need something faster than the lens kit (f/3.5-5.6 is extremely slow.) I own the 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens and its a beauty in low light!
4. There is no good 10X optical zoom. Thats preschool talk with the Point and Shoot, even though I love my lil point and shoot camera =). Most lenses are 2X optical BUT it means squat in terms of point and shoot cameras. You get optical zoom by dividing the large number by the small number so in the case of the 70-200mm its about 2X optical zoom. Also if there was a 25-50mm lens that would also be 2X optical zoom.
5. Nikon and Canon have picture colors that will blow your mind, you just have to bring them out in photoshop and/or mess around with the color settings in the menu.

I. The Canon Rebel XTi will be the best camera under $1000, it is very user friendly and has lots of automated features if you get lazy, like me. The Nikon D70 and D50, their more for the "Dad who likes good pictures with their dog or kid" they are still good cameras but their more oriented to the real comsumer camera.
II. Anti-shake in camera is horrible. Thats why Canon and Nikon have NEVER put on into their cameras, only their lenses. You want lenses that have anti-shake because they are more practical but do a much better job at it than a sensor anti shake. Canon is IS and Nikon its called VR.

Vertict- For under $1000, the best camera will be the Canon Rebel XTi. I never regretted buying it after deciding between the Nikon D80 and the Canon Rebel XTi.

As said, you can consider a Nikon D50 and an 18-200 VR lens, but that will take you a bit over budget and the VR is in the lens - not the camera body. Personally, I think the Nikon D80 would be my choice in this general price class, but in an attempt to keep to your request, I will suggest that you look at the Pentax K10D; a 10.2 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera Kit with Pentax Zoom Super Wide Angle SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL Autofocus Lens. B&H (and others) have this kit for $999.95.

I like my K10D, However to get the zoom you want (28-300 coverage) You'll need to get the kit lens (18-55 metal mount, not the POS canon/nikon plastic ones) and the 50-200 (also metal mount). in USD $1250 - $50 rebate.

It also has been rated better the D80/XTi and Alpha A100.

Staying under $1,000 I do like the Olympus Evolt E500 2 lens out fit for just shy of $800 (plus you'll need memory card, etc) so you'll be under $1000.

We recently purchased an Olympus Evolt E500. It came with two lenses. It takes amazing pictures and the enlargements are also excellent. I'm not sure if it satisfies all of your preferences, but it is worth looking at. The cost was just under $1000.00 with a few accessories.
