My grandad had a swallow tattoo on his hand, he had it done when he was younger and I want the same tattoo on my shoulder blade. The problem is I cant find the same kind, all the swallow tattoo's seem to have fire coming out of them etc. Does anyone know a website that might have old school ones on? Its just a plain one that Im after, not one on fire, or with big anchors hanging off them. Thanks xx

If its more old school and Im sure it is because he is an older guy then its probably Sailor Jerry. Go to www.SailorJerry.com or go to a search engine and type in sailor jerry swallows, it should bring up a few good ones, my husband has old traditional sailor jerry swallows tattooed on the tops of his hands as well.

Exactly that - a jerry sailor tattoo! I think they're lovely, ive always wanted a couple of the old school swallows but im still deciding where i would have them. My friend just got one done and her husband jokes that it means shes a lesbian - shes not and it doesn't mean that lol! Its YOUR tattoo so it can mean whatever you want it to : ) Especially in this day and age with tattoos being so versatile it really doesn't matter. People who are going to judge you just based on your tattoos alone aren't worth knowing and anyone who shows interest enough to ask - you can tell them what it means then...if it means anything at all!

Ask your family if anyone has a picture of this tattoo. Or if you have a general idea of what it looked like and what colors, ask a reputable tattoos artist if they have pictures of swallows or if they can draw something up for you.

I wish you luck.

Older tattoos can indeed be notoriously hard to find. I searched for 6 years for mine, and only just got it!

Since you've got your grandad around, why not bring him along when you go for your first appointment with your tattooist, so that he/ she will know exactly what you want?

Good luck :)

Go to a reputable shop, describe your grandfathers tattoo to them and have them draw up a custom design.

umm....get a picture of it from your grandpa.

and they tattoo artist will make work of his "artist" label and draw it for you. you don't ahve to get a tattoo that comes from a book or a template, they can make whatever you want...if they're good.
