Everyone else covered your question about the flight.
Regarding ferry to the south of Thailand - it is not worth the time and effort. If you have plenty of time then take a bus from BKK to the south. It is a day's trip non stop to the south but a bus trip over two or three days will give you a wonderful experience of meeting the local lifestyle and visiting beautiful scenic places.
But the most economical way is actually fly down to the south. Dearer than bus but still relatively cheap.

Hi, fare wise, check the travel sites for your pricing.
As for time to visit, between now and April is still the dry season in Thailand. Rain is not expected till the Thai New Year from Apr 13. However this will apply to the provinces in the central, north and northeast. The southern region is pretty tropical and you can get rain at anytime of the year. And Phuket is in the south. So just see what weather you get when you arrived.
You will still have a good time anyway.
Oh, the tourists arrivals will be high during the New Year, and for the June period. Peak is usually from Nove to Jan.

Thailand is a wonderful country to visit. First, I wouldn't go on a tour deal. You can take a friend or meet a new Thai friend that will love to guide you for a few dollars a day. Stay at the Malysia Hotel. It's cheap, safe, clean and in a good location and the staff is very helpful in directing you to places etc. They speak English. The rate is $12-14 US dollars and it includes breakfast! Their you will for sure meet like travelers. You can gain a whirlwind of knowledge as to places to go, things to see etc. from sitting in the lobby and listening to the informal discussions. I live there part of the year and have a Thai friend who loves his country and loves to show it off and share it with tourists. He's 100% honest, polite, friendly and knows Thailand very well. He will spend an hour, or a day or a week at your beconed call and show you what you want to see and do and tell you what's available. I can share his email with you if your interested. If you have more questions or concerns I will be happy to correspond with you. I know alot of tricks in traveling in Thailand. I was a first time tourist once myself. Maybe if I'm there when you are I can show you my favorite places to eat. The whole trip is much cheaper than most places. I eat lunch almost everyday for about 85 cents including a can of coke. I have always found the best air fares on China Airline out of eithe LAX or SFO. Let me know what else you want to know.

I would say a reasonable price is around 800. Best time to go, so it's not insanely hot is October to Feb. After that the rain starts. So better go ASAP! Don't go to Phuket, go to Koh Samet. it's 4 hours from Bangkok and really laid back. lots of locals...price about $8 for bus/boat combo.

I took a discounted flight www.airasia.com from Bangkok to Phuket for around AUD$35 each person one way. There are many discounted domestic airlines available (nokair or bangkokair) and take only 45 minutes.
If you are looking for accomodation for a family or a group, I have a 2-bed townhouse in Phuket available for rent. It is fully furnished, see more details from this link

i think you need to go online and look at prices, asking here doesn't help you need actually price. Best time to go is anytime, but for you I recommend June or July, your still see rain but just short and heavy down pours, don't sweat the rain. I know of now ferry boats going south.

I also would not let rainy season bother me.. Actually, I like most of rainy season.. a brief shower and thats it.. Sept - October only might have annoying rains.. and airline prices fluctuate more than the stock mkt.. Find a consolidator and if your schedule is flexible, you should easily get something less that $1000 -
come on over - - great here!!

thailand weather........its pretty decent from Nov-March, thats high season for tourists........unbearably hot from Apr-May...( i was there last year for Songkran festival)... rainy season from June-Oct......dont worry, it just rains for maybe 1-2 hrs between 4-6 p.m............There is no ferry that goes from BKK to Phuket.....If youre flying out of chicago you will probably not get a direct flight...I know theres direct flights to BKK from LA/SF....depends on the airline, but expect to pay 1000 and up for return flight

Late September-October is a good time, and you can usually get cheaper hotel rates, because it is not considered high tourist season yet. You should expect to pay around $1000 for your airline ticket.

I don't know...all I know is that 'man who walk sideway into airport is going to Bangkok'.
You can always check travelocity and sites like that, though.
