This is why Muhatma Ghandi said something like:
Had I never met a christian, I would have followed christ.

You talk about threatening as if man is a neutral player in this, and he is not. Mankind has been guilty since the fall of Adam, and fully deserving of eternal damnation. God would be fully justified in not saving anyone, so free will simply becomes any decision we want, without an ability to choose God it becomes a single destination of Hell.
I'm thankful that He has determined to save his own, predestined from before the foundations of the world to enter into a relationship with his sheep, holding them in the palm of his hand, saved from eternity to eternity.
I don't see a threatening God in any of this. All I see is a nature that results in our own damnation, save for His loving grace.

ah, the wise one has made a very BIG mistake.....
you confuse being told what God says with threatening....
although if I were a non-believer, I would feel threatened and very scared , too....
not by the messenger but by He who created the message. only a fool shoots the messenger.
if you have a problem with the Truth about your eternal destination, take it up with God.

First, it is not a threat it is a promise from God, second, you do have free will, you can choose heaven or hell, just like with our laws you can choose to follow or break them, but there are consequences for both, if you break the law then you will be punished, if you follow it then you won't.

It is our free will to warn you,
It is your free will to accept it or not.
Calling us "brain washed" and "threatening" does not change the fact that God will have the final word, according to His free will.

We do not threaten----God promises. We are merely messengers of him that wrote the message.
