First, thank you for deciding to fix your cat. Each state has it's own laws regarding the age. I live in WV and vets won't fix a female cat until their 6 months and a male cat at 7 months. Males should have their testicles descended. Call your vet and ask them what their age for spaying females is. I know that some animal shelters will have cats and dogs fixed as young as 2 months. I've got 2 female cats, a male kitten and a male puppy getting fixed at the vets today. My other 11 cats and 2 dogs have already been fixed.

Kittens can be "fixed" as early as 8 weeks old, male or female. But the average for both genders is about 6 months.

We just had our kitty fixed last week. She is about 5 and a half months. Our vet said she could be fixed at 5 months. She said the sooner the better. We thought 4 months was too young. That was when she wanted to do it orginally.

If it's female, preferably before it goes into heat the first time because that can be really embarrassing. If it's a male, it will want to carouse around the neighborhood with it's friends and get into cat fights with the females. It is best to do it while they are still fairly young before they reach about 5-6 months.

Most vets now will do it any any age past 12 weeks old. In the old days it was 6-8 months for boys, and 4-6 months for females.

Talk to your vet. When I talked to my vet, my cat was only 3 months old at the time and he set up the appointment to have him neutered the next day.
