pc friends have to download free Adobe Reader for some email attachments - would using e-mac with OSX ever have a need to do this?

Preview comes with OS X and is faster than Adobe Reader. You could download Reader if you like, but you don't really need it.

By the way, in OS X you can print directly to a pdf file from any application that prints. You don't need any special software. Just click on the PDF button when the print dialog box appears.

Your Mac probably came with it installed from the factory, check your Applications Folder.
