Contact a quality brid store, locally or on the internet. Look fo ra product called SCATT. It works very well and is safe to use.

Don't bother with the stuff you hang on the cage. They are low level toxic and from what I have heard, are pretty much a waste of time. Treat the birds when they show symptoms. Having said that, if you have more than one bird, be sure to treat all of them at the same time, even the ones that aren't showing signs. I would also retreat about ten days after the first application, just to be sure there were no 'left overs'.

Mites are a pain to get rid of. It can take several months. Sorry! First thing you want to do is remove all the perches in the cage. Fill a utilty bucket with a water and clorox bleach soloution usually one gallon of water to one cup of bleach. Personally i'd put the bucket outside or in the garage and throw the perches into the bucket. Remove your bird from the cage and place him in a carrier or a box. Take a look at the cage. Look in the tiny crevices and between cupholders, were perches used to be, near the area where the cage gets hung etc... If you see a large amount of black specs on your cage, You might as well purchase a new cage. It's very difficult to destroy the mite eggs, and could take a few weeks to completely wipe them out. Typically if the bird actually has them on the feathers, the cage has the mites quite bad. Personally i would just get a whole new cage. Any rope toys, perches etc will need to be thrown out. If he has any all plastic toys, you can put them in the bucket of bleach as well... items like swings with wood and beads, wood perches should be discarded. Use a mite and lice spray on your bird. Many pet stores carry this. Pick up a product called "bird protector" also, it helps prevent mite and lice infestations however will not destroy current infestations. If your cage was not that bad, i would create a bleach and water soloution in a utility sink and soak the cage for an hour or two. If your cage doesnt fit in the sink... make the bleach water soloution in a spray bottle and competely cover the cage in bleach. Rinse and repeat a few times. Thorougly clean the cage with a scrub brush and once you have finished rise the cage extremely well. Let the toys, perches soak for at least 4 hours... this will cause the mites to detach from the perch and hopefully die. After everythings rinsed and squeaky clean.... spray everything with the mite and lice spray. Let that dry before you put the bird back in. Dont forget to spray the bird too! To prevent the mites... montly removing of the perches and toys will help you know when theres a problem or help things stay nice and clean so they dont get the chance to breed. You can also use the mite and lice spray regularly. Parakeets and canaries are prone to mites... mainly because they are bred in mass...a nd not always in the best conditions! Good Luck! I forgot to add... if your bird starts wheezing and is having nasal discharge... he may have air sac mites. Its a serious thing caused by cage/feather mite infestations... just something to look out for... can be treated by ivermectin soloution in the water.

Check with a quality pet store in your area for a recommendation of an "over the counter" remedy. Don't go to Wal-Mart or Alberstons' and buy an inferior brand, and, if you see no results SOON, get your bird to a vet. It is not responsible to own an animal that you cannot properly care for. Mites can be deadly to your bird!!!

Call your vet and work out a payment plan with them. Your bird NEEDS to see the vet for proper treatment. The mite protectors you hang on the cage just slowly poison your bird.
