It depends on what is causing it. Tonsilitis is not a disease of its own, but an infection of the tonsils that results from a virus or bacterial infection. If it caused by a virus they usually don't even treat with antibiotics. If they are using antibiotics its was most likely caused by strep or other such bacteria and they should be treated that way. Get rid of the toothbrush and clean the toothbrush holder. Don't use the same cup, etc...

Usually it takes 24-48 hours to be no longer contagious when on antibiotics, but there are some resistnt forms of Strep that don't respond well and it may take longer or even a change in meds before they are no longer contagious.

Once they have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours they are considered not contagious.

,If you are talking about Group B,beta -strep tonsillitis it would until the antibiotics were completed.Usually patients are feeling better before the meds are finished. With Beta -strep, they commonly cause other serious infections like "scarlet fever" and endocarditis,its better to keep children away from others,or follow your MD's advice. Take care. SW RNP
