Does it go in a "cargo-only" area of the plane where no passengers have access to like the under-belly of the plane or does it go on a completely different plane?

It goes in the underbelly of the plane. You can see the baggage handlers loading it before takeoff.

Or, at least, it should. When luggage gets "lost," that means that it accidentally got placed onto the wrong plane, or never got placed on the plane in the first place. When that happens, I believe they put your luggage on the next available flight to your destination.

When travelling by plane the luggage goes on the same plane as the passenger. I have been on flights where the passenger doesn't check-in on time at the departure gate and the luggage was pulled off the plane. There have been a few instances where the luggage might be on a different flight.

Your checked luggage goes on the same aircraft with you and is stored in the cargo area of the aircraft. Unless you check in so late and the aircraft is already loaded in that case the luggage will travel on another aircraft going to your destination - you may have to wait for the luggage to get there.

usually goes on the same plane in the cargo area, unless the plane is too full or lost.

Unless they make a mistake your baggage is sent in the cargo section of the same plane you're flying on.

Its just luggage so they truck it to the nearest rail station and send it by train. What is so amazing is that you get off the plane and shortly afterwards here it comes around the luggage carousel.
