Yah... I have come accross cats like this... ususally they are kittens or just naturally skittish or both. Textures that are new to a skittish cat will be "suspicious" to the cat who will gingerly paw at it or watch and watch and watch it until such time as he becomes certain that the thing on the ground is harmless. Pat or "pet" the carpet in the sight of your skittish cat to show him that the carpet is harmless. But allow cat to take his time discovering this himself. He'll eventually realize that the carpet is not alive and can be walked on, clawed, etc.

Maybe the texture of the carpet feels strange or perhaps it has been treated with chemicals that the cat can smell and doesn't like.

You probably have a lot of static electricity in your house. The cat can feel it when he walks across the carpet and it probably makes his hairs stand on end.

,Sometimes they just don't like the different textures, especially if it is something new (you didn't say if it was new carpet) Eventually the cat should start to walk on it, you know ,I'm sure that cats are sometimes very strange creatures. (but lovable)

Maybe her claws are getting caught in it, if it is a loop carpet. Another explaination is that she gets shocks from static. You didn't provide a lot of info. If it is the nails, you can try trimming her claws a bit, if it is shocking, try a humidifier. If you have other pet stains in your carpet, she may not like the smell, you can try getting it professionally cleaned.

I've got to agree with the static electricity. My home at 40% humidity and the static is unreal. The ideal humidity level is around 60%. Humidfiers, pan of water set on stove, anything to boost humidity in the home is good.
