Cookies harden as they cool-- when they're still hot, the glucose molecules expand, as the temperture in the cookie drops, the molecules contract and harden. It's normal and should be expected of most baked goods-- bread, pastries, etc.

To keep your cookies soft after baking, put them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag with a piece of store bought bread. Homemade bread doesn't work.
This trick can also salvage already hard cookies (like 1 day old, not 1 week).
I don't have a clue why this works, but it does. My husband taught me this trick a while ago, and everyone always comments on how good and soft my cookies are (even when I made them the day before).

just likes they a steak can still cook with the heat it has even on a cold plate i am sure other foods like cookies do the same so maybe take out of the oven a couple minutes sooner or lower the temp a few degrees

I always bake my cookies 2 minutes less than what the directions say, that way they stay soft. Also I store them in an airtight container or a Ziplock bag.

They were most likely over-cooked. Try cooking them a few minutes less next time. The cookies harden a little bit while they cool.

Cookies will get harder when they cool. You can try baking them a minute or two less next time, this will make them softer.

The only way u can get v, clod/soft, cookies is to make ur own/from scratch.... They adertise ,"them as soft, & they can, because they're when they r warm, only they don't say & they don't have to, that they get hard , when they get cold", Does that make any sense?!!?!?!?!
