I'm planning a trip in May to IL and I'm wondering if the ticket price will decrease in the months to follow. Any advice as to when I should start booking a flight?

2 months but not later than 14 days before the date of flight

Agreed, the sooner, the better, as fares rarely go down. But many of the airlines are now offering "lowest price" guarantees where, if you purchase directly from the airline (and not on travelocity or a similar site) and the fare goes down, they'll issue a credit or refund of the difference.

The further in advance that you purchase the ticket, the cheaper the price will be.
