...I am not sure what you know about crucifixion, but it was not invented by the Romans, but it was "perfected" by them - causing the utmost pain and suffering to the one being executed. The criminal's feet were nailed to a plank, which allowed the criminal to hold himself up, and thus avoid suffocating. One who was crucified could last as long as 7 days before dying. We are told in Scripture that Jesus' legs were not broken, so why wouldn't He be able to talk?
...He suffered infinitely for our sins. Observe, from Isaiah 53:
...4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, and our sorrows He carried; yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
...5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed.
...6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.
...7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, so He did not open His mouth.
...8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as for His generation, who considered that He was cut off out of the land of the living for the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
...9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
...10 But the LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; if He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
...11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; by His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, as He will bear their iniquities.
...12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, and He will divide the booty with the strong; because He poured out Himself to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet He Himself bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

GENERALLY, the cause of death was suffocation. The reason was, the nails in the feet were what the person had to push themselves up with to get a breath of air. The people were hanged by their (hands) with nails thru them and this constricted the lungs making it most difficult to breathe. Take that, the beatings, and the stress on other body organs into account and HE may have died from any number of things. Heart failure was common. Stress creates many organ failures on the cross. The individuals that were crucified were generally tortured beyond our understanding and belief. The whips that were used contained sharp stones and bones tied in them and they ripped the skin off of their backs. The individuals were forced to carry their own crosses placing more stress on them. There were times that birds and bugs would get into the wounds and cause more damage to the individual during crucifixion. It was one of the cruelist deaths imaginable. We have no idea how HE died, probably from a "Bursted Heart". From what I remember, there was water that came from his side after it was punctured this tells us that HE died from a Heart problem. Some say that it basically "Exploded". Have a great time reading the responses.
Thanks,
Eds

Edit... Christ was our perfect sacrifice. The Sacrificial Lambs were not "bled to death". Their blood was considered sacrificial as is Jesus' Blood our cleansing thru baptism. The individual earlier missed that point all together, as always.

Bob, The stabbing was to confirm HIS Death. I believe that the stabbing was after HIS Death, wan't it??
Thanks again,
Eds (Christian)

I don't know where people get the idea that crucifixion causes suffocation. Your hands and feet may be nailed, but that does not affect the function of your diaphragm. People who were crucified often took days to die. In fact, they had to break the legs of the two thieves because they weren't dead yet. They didn't have to break Christ's legs, because He already died - and He died of a broken heart. His separation from His Father and the crushing weight of all the world's sins is what killed Him.

Good question but it was once said that Jesus died of a cardiac arrest before the suffocation due to the beatings and stress on his body from the hanging...the suffocation would be from his lungs filling with fluid.

Although I wasn't there so I can't be sure but that is the answer I was given. Good luck in your quest to find out the truth

And for the record I do believe.

It's quite gory but as long as the victim can stand the weight is supported by the nails through the ankles but when they are no longer able to stand pressure on the diaphragm results in suffocation. Historical records showed a healthy victim could take up to three days to die so Jesus died comparatively quickly.

Crucifixion does kill by asphyxiation but the truth depth of the horror is rarely described.

If you push your bones hard enough against the rope or nail at your feet, you can lift yourself up a bit and take the pressure of your arms off your rib cage, allowing you to take a breath. However, this quickly wears out the muscles and you will eventually die from asphyxiation.

However, this raises another good question. A valid sacrifice has to die from blood loss -- but Jesus died of asphyxiation (otherwise, he would have lost consciousness and remained alive for some time as the blood continued to drain). Once again proof that Jesus was an invalid sacrifice.

----------------

Also, it's worth noting that nails were NOT commonly used in crucifixions. Iron was hard to work and shape, nails were exceedingly expensive and would not often be wasted on killing a criminal.

Most criminals were simply tied to the cross. Same effect -- death by asphyxiation.

Eds and Carson 123 have summed up the answer to your question with the BIBLE to back them. Jesus died for all so that all MIGHT be saved. He is the ultimate sacrifice.
Hebrews 11:6 --- But without FAITH it is impossible to please him, for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of them which diligently seek him.

Why wouldn't JESUS have been able to use his last ounce of energy to cry out to GOD. Christ shed his Blood on the Cross, The blood was trickling down from the crown of thorns, from the pierced side, from the nails in his hands and feet. Through Baptism we reach Christ blood and it cleanses us and through the grace of God continually cleanses us as we faithfully serve God.

Because, first, He is the Son of God, second it is a slow suffocation and the romans gave Him a way to push Himself up to get air, but it was painful because he would rub His back against the rough wood(the same back that was wipped) and the nails would grind against His bone and flesh tearing the holes and nerves, and when He fell back down unto His waight it would crush His lungs and thus causing more pain and agony. however, that is not the point, the point is He did it for you, so that you would not have to suffer in Hell.

in continuation with JPs answer..... He was jabbed with a spear which could have punctured his lung. With one lung collapsed, any breath taken in would have made it very difficult to breath. Kind of like a tire that has a big hole in it, you can fill it with air, but almost as fast as you put the air in, it comes out the hole. He would have been able to breath but not very good and over time, he would have overcome to suffocation by not being able to get enough oxygen into his bloodstream. This along with being nailed up on the cross, only made it that much worse.

I just always thought he pulled himself up one last time. I also always thought that he died more from the wounds than from suffocation. He died faster than the other two guys next to him didn't he? And didn't they beat him a lot worse than they beat other people who were crucified?
