You are right. Your father could have been buried in a Veterans Cemetery free & received the money to pay for funeral home expenses or his estate can apply for the $600 or so money to help offset burial. Go to vba.va.gov - it is the Veterans Administration website. Must be .gov to be accurate. Good luck - sorry for your loss, but you are right at $20,000 for everyone who was in military for 4 yrs it would bankrupt the Veterans Administration budget.
Check on state website for any missed life insurance policy from long ago.

Call the VA at 1-800-669-8477 or go to www.Insurance.VA.GOV
This is the Regional Office and VA Insurance Center in Philadelphia PA. However, the VA in the area you live can also answer your questions, general questions like "How would you find out if your father had insurance through the Veterans Admin.?"
The VA general # is 1-800--827-1000.
DAV 1-510-834-2921.
Also, call the DVA and ask the same questions. The Disabled
American Veterans Organization, or the DVA, works closely with the VA in support of Veterans and their families.

Puphobonzo ... We're sorry to know about your loss.
As you suspect, I believe the entitlements are not as generous as your sister thinks. I've provided some relevant links below. Not all of these will apply to you, necessarily. However, it's a start and one or more of them might get you started in the right direction. Notice that ALL of these links are from the .mil domain or the Department of Veterans Affairs.
Good luck with your research and this veteran is grateful for your father's service.

There is no $20,000 insurance just for being in the military. He may be eligible for some burial expenses, depends on his type of discharge. Contact your local Veterans Administration, or VFW.

I don't think he is entitled. I am a veteran and served 4 years in the army. I am entitled to nothing.

Was he disabled?
My mother was honorably discharged and was disabled. She goes to the VA all the time know, and she and I both get benefits because over the years, she's become 100% disabled. I'd look into it first before saying it's not true.
