Another term for underactive thyroid is hypothyroidism defined as a condition in which the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone.
The thyroid gland, located in the front of the neck just below the larynx, secretes hormones that control metabolism. These hormones are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The secretion of T3 and T4 is controlled by the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus, which is part of the brain. Thyroid disorders may result not only from defects in the thyroid gland itself, but also from abnormalities of the pituitary or hypothalamus.

Hypothyroidism is caused by the thyroid gland (butterfly-like structure in the neck) not producing enough hormones (called T3 and T4 hormones). Other things may also cause decreased T3 and T4 production such as secondary and tertiary hypothyroidism which affect the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus respectively.
Thyroid hormones are important because they regulate the body's metabolic processes (the processes the body uses to convert food nutrients into the molecules that the body needs for energy). So a decrease in the level of these hormones will cause body functions to slow down, and the person to feel tired and out of energy. It can also cause dry skin, hair thinning, depression, and trouble remembering things/concentrating.
The condition most commonly affects women and develops in midlife. Treatment basically involves taking a hormone replacement pill every day for life and most patients recover completely with this.
A good website for more detailed info. is The American Thyroid Association website: http://www.thyroid.org. They have a web-book and brochure on the subject here: http://www.thyroid.org/patients/brochures.html

feeling tired, sluggish, indention's in tongue from teeth, dry elbows, hair loss in pubic area/eyebrows, for men-reproductive
disabilities. The thyroid is a small organ, but is connected to all
other organ functions due to hormone balances. If you recently have had some hormone issues, or are taking synthetic hormone replacement, it could burn out your thyroid. Thyroid specialist is what you need to be seeking if you have any of the above issues and or have had relatives with thyroid problems.
Don't fool around any longer only seeking out answers on the Internet, go the full distance and get a thyroid specialist.

Symptoms include; weight gain, difficulty losing weight with diet & exercise, IBS with constipation, dry skin, dry thinning hair, fatigue, depression, mood changes, infertility, low body temp, low bp, slow heart rate, sensitivity to light, ridged fingernails with no moons, sleep apnea, deepened voice, feeling of fullness in the throat, muscle and joint aches.
Testing involves a blood blood test. Mostdoctors just do a TSH. I suggest a TSH, free t4, free t3, and an antibody test.
