I want to get from La Guardia to Manhattan, and then later on, from Manhattan to JFK.

I know about the flat fare and tolls, ect....

However, is there anything thing I should watch out for, or are New York cab drivers pretty good to tourists?

You shouldn't have any problem when you take a regular cab.

from nyc.gov website: (read the rest at my source link)
"The Taxi & Limousine Commission is conducting a "Flat Fare" program for trips between (to and from) the Borough of Manhattan and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The flat fare is $45.00 plus any tolls. The meter will not be turned on and the night surcharge will not be added."

On a regular ride, it's actually difficult for a cab driver to rip you off as long as the meter is running and you know the current rates. I've only had a few problems and they were because the cab driver got 'lost' and refused to follow my directions. I was in the back seat yelling "Where the hell are you going?? I'm not paying extra for this!!" One guy turned a $15 ride into a $28 because he made a bunch of wrong turns while I was screaming out directions. When I got out of the cab, I handed him the amount the ride should have been and refused to pay any more. I basically said "F**k you, you admitted you were lost and refused to listen to my directions"

Also, watch out for the private car service guys. They usually charge double compared to a regular cab for a typical ride. If you call a car service rather than flagging down a cab, ALWAYS ask the price beforehand when on the phone then confirm it with the driver when he shows up.

There is a flat fare from the airports to manhattan, last time I was in New York it was $45 dollars. Getting from Manhattan to JFK has no flat fare, however it should be around 35-40 dollars if your flight is early and there is no traffic.

I guess no cab drivers are in general "that nice" with turists, however I will suggest you to be firm and look sure when you tell them where you want to go... even if you don´t know how to get there for sure ;)

Don't worry. You know what the fare should be. You can confirm that with the driver when you get in the cab. After he told you how much, he won't go over by much. This works all over the world: agree on the fare first.

Do your research online at either mapquest or google maps. Know the shortest way to get where you are going and tell the cabbie to take you that way.
