Absolutely not. Most of the Roman martyrs were lay men, women and even children.

There is a married couple recently canonised too, can't remember their Italian names though.

A lot of them became priests and nuns after experiencing a miraculous encounter with God or a miracle. The experience led them to the life of the monastery or convent as either a devotion to God or to get away from the crowds who would not leave them alone.

I think anyone can be a saint. Saints are those who strive to do what is right. They don't have to be nationally recognized or anything. Just good people doing their best for real.
