My boyfriend and I earned around the same amount of income last year, as a matter a fact I earned a little more than him. But they withheld less Fed Taxes from me than him (1,000 dollars) why?

We have both filled as singles with no dependents.

Also, making slightly more than him may push you into a slightly higher tax bracket..

Income tax is based on your filing status. If you & your boyfriend both filed as single with no dependents your tax should have been roughly the same. Possibly you filed as single with a dependent?

Your withholding amounts are based on your W4 that you fill out when you start a job. Do you claim single 0, single 1 etc.

Most likely your withholding exemptions were not the same. If you had one exemption on your W4 and he had 0 on his, that would explain it.

It's also possible that one of you had pre-tax deductions from your pay.
