As the other's have said, 18 in most states, as it is still legally considered a long rifle or shotgun class firearm.
A word of warning though, a pistol grip shotgun can be very hard on the hands, depending on the type of ammunition you use. Slugs and buckshot have the potential to create such an enormous amount of recoil that in a worst case could break your thumb or seriously sprain your hand and wrist. I have a Mossberg 500 Tactical Cruiser, model 54125, and it's an excellent gun for home defense. While the stopping power of birdshot (#7 1/2 loads) is not very high, 5 rounds into an intruder can seriously slow him down long enough for me to grab my sidearm and finish the job.
My advice would be to find someone who has a pistol grip mossberg and try shooting with it, or better yet, buy a Mossberg 500 Tactical Persuader, model 50411 which comes with a full buttstock, and buy a pistol grip to swap with the buttstock. That way, for home defense, you can use the pistol grip, or if it doesn't suit you, you still have the full buttstock you can put back onto it.
For home defense, I highly recommend an 18-20" barrel, as it will increase the speed at which the shot spreads, preferably open cylinder bore. You can find both 18 and 20" barrels on the Mossberg Special Purpose pump shotguns, which are the category that the Tactical Persuader and Tactical Cruiser models are.
Good luck, and safe shooting!

Federal rules are easy, you have to be 18 to buy a long gun (rifle or shotgun), and 21 to buy a handgun. You may purchase long guns in your state of residence or the states that touch it, you may only purchase handguns in your state of residence. Some states or cities may have tighter restrictions, of course, but since you didn't tell us where you are this is all I can give.
The fact that the shotgun has a pistol girp is irrelevant from the standpoint of federal law, which is really only concerned with barrel length (which must be 18"), but may again effect you at the state level (In MIssouri, for example, a weapon is considered concealable if it is under a certain overall length, and concealable weapons require a special permit to acquire.).
