Well, some hatchbacks don't have a ton of space behind the rear seats. The Fit and Yaris are that kind of hatchback. You might not be able to fit your stroller without folding it, and if your pack has a rigid frame, that might be a problem, too. I presume you're going to be hauling this stuff while you have the kids in the car, right?

Here's a picture of what I mean.

If you don't fold down the rear seat, you might have problems. Same goes for the Scion xB (which is otherwise awesome).

I'd look for a used Mazda Protege 5. The Mazda 3 is also a little better in rear-cargo room than the Fit and Yaris. You'll take a small hit to fuel economy, but if you're shopping for practicality, put your space needs first.

My two cents...The Fit and Yaris are the most ridiculous looking cars I have seen in a long time...almost as stupid as the Pontiac Aztec abortion a few years back. Anyhow...The Subaru is cool as already mentioned but for the money I would go with a Ford Focus ZX3 {two door hatchback} or ZX5{4 door hatchback}.

I just bought a Subaru Imprezza hatchback, and I love it! I also looked at the Fit, the Vibe, Chevy HHR, among others. The Subaru has all wheel drive and one of the highest safety ratings around. Check it out!

I love Hondas - there's an expression about going with Honda and never changing. Everyone I know who has a Honda has regretted changing.
