Why don't you try Vanquis (credit card). They worked for me as I had poor credit history due to debts. But they can also be usefull if you have never had credit. If you apply and use the card wisely (settle bill in full every time) in time you will have you credit limit increased and you can start to build your credit rating.

Apparently it is just as bad having no history as having bad history, no history to check, no idea if you'll pay up. Had a similar problem and was told to stick with who you know. If you have a bank account, try them! Or else get your credit rating and their websites can give you some advice on what to do.

it is considered normal to have one credit application every month, so if you have less and have never had a credit card it can be very hard. I had to take a loan from one of those rip off companies just to get my foot on the ladder.
Its a weird system. You have to be in debt to get credit, go figure?

If a company refuses you they must give you details of any credit reference agency they used.
For a small fee the agency must give you a copy of any file they have on you.
You have the right to add an amendment to the file if appropriate.
The local Citizens Advice Bureau has full details.

Start with store credit cards, like Sears or whatever the UK equivalent of Sears is. Use it to build your credit slowly.

Why do you need credit when you can go to a Building Society and get a personal loan anyway. If you can't afford what you want, you should go without. Unless it's food of course.

sometimes it can just be your address, if someone who used to live at your address had bad credit, then they automatically assume you're the same, it's a bloody nightmare!!
check www.experian.co.uk/creditreport, or www.equifax.co.uk; they're the 2 agencies that deal with credit rating
