My boyfriend and I both can cook. I am a little better at it than him but has worked in a restaurant before on the line. When people find out he can cook a little (esp. women) he gets all the props and attention and it drives me crazy! The women get all googly eyed It and flirtatious and go on and on about how great it is.( maybe becuase his cousin lied and told them he was " A hollywood chef" which is far from the truth!
For New Year's we cooked for his cousin's party. I made three yummy dishes from scratch, he made 2 -A fruit plate ( he cut up some fruit) and a ham ( pre cooked and wrapped in dough ( from the local pizza shop). He got credit for the whole meal and people would not stop talking about the ham ,which a monkey could have made given instructions!
I know men have traditionally been chefs for some reason even though a lot of women can cook well and get no props or respect! It is just taken for granted and we are just looked upon as home cooks or not as good >

Because society as a whole portrays men as mindless idiots.

The real truth is because any man who is not a cullinary school graduate is just not thought of as someone who can cook, so people are always surprised when it happens.
The reason that a lot of WOMEN make a fuss over a guys cooking is simple: These days most women want an equal partner in a relationship, or at least someone who has the potential to be an equal partner. Most (not all) men do not do things that are traditionally considered to be "woman's work", such as changing diapers, cooking meals, or cleaning the house, so that any man who displays these capabilities will look more attractive to women.
In this day and age, a person who has a well-rounded ability to care for themselves and others are the ones we look forward to spending time, or the rest of our lives with.

Thats a good question. I think it has 2 answers. I have been cooking for many years, and can cook any food you can dream up. Women loved it, and now my wife does. Part of it i think if the fact the many guys cannot not cook, so those that can are rare. At least ones who are good at it, and have actually studied it. And second, cooking for a friend or loved one can be a very intimate experience. Sharing a homemade meal, especially one made just for a certian person can be a great, sometimes romantic experience. I know over the years, my cooking has impressed many many more women then men, and i think it is a combination of the two things.

First of all, I think you did a nice job making your new years meal. SInce no one said thanks to you, I figure I would step up and do that in the hopes that it would make you feel a little better. By they way your dishes tasted better too. I guess everyone else went crazy because so few men can actually cook, and I don't mean heating something up, I mean cook. I had to teach my hubby to cook because the only teacher he had to teach him to cook growing up was his mom and she cooked everything out of a box. If you catch my drift on that one. But she was a hell of a baker and that he did pick up from her. Every thanksgiving he makes homemade apple pie and at xmas he makes the pierogies with me. A few years back I fell and broke my ankle two days before Thanksgiving, he had to cook the whole meal himself and other than the stuffing the meal was great. SInce then that gave him a whole new meaning to cooking and what I actually do. But he does not take credit unless credit is do when it comes to the kitchen because then he realizes that I will stop cooking for him. It is all probably a male ego thing and I am sorry that this happened to you. For the others to make a big deal over him, well they will realize that he is blowing smoke up the a@$, have him cook them a whole meal and they will see that he is not that great. Good Luck.

A lot of women get "googly eyed" because it is not a thing they have at home and wish they did. I myself would like to say I am a well rounded cook and can make pretty much anything becuase I was raised with my father being the elder by 22 years of my mother and he always did the cooking. I was taught at a young age how to cook, clean, and take care of myself and my belongings, so I never had to depend on anyone to do anything for me. It is so typical of a woman to be lady of the house and do all of the cooking and cleaning and stuff that if another woman hears your man cooks it's like you are getting a break she doesn't get. Just take it all with a grain of salt, YOU KNOW WHERE YOU STAND IN THE KITCHEN , and if you ever don't feel like cooking then you have someone there who can fill in for you .

We live in a world in which, in many cultures, men rely on the women to do everything except wipe their butts. Women get excited when they see a man with a potential to do something other than sit on the couch watching football and drinking beer. Im not necessary sure it has anything to do with the flavor of the food so much as about fantasy fulfillment or that food is so often seen as an expression of affection and care. My husband cooks for me and I love it. But you are probably right that women's skills are not always valued quite as much as mens. Sadly this is still true around the world.

Myself - I get to cook almost every night mostly because if he cooks - I am not sure what will end up on my plate. A man that cooks is a turn on for me because it would be nice to not have the burden of having to cook EVERY night.... my trade is I let him take me out to dinner so that I get a break every once in a while.

I think you answered your own question. that being said, women are impressed when a guy that is not a chef cooks because a lot of men do think of women as just the one to do the cooking. they like the effort.

There are lots of men who cook very well. For the women, these men have written cookbooks so that women can learn to cook well, too...:-)
