A space elevator is possible. There are, however, some important difficulties associated with it. Building a structure for it will be both difficult and expensive. Some of the issues involved in the construction of a space elevator have to do with the structure associated with it: the differences in atmospheric pressure at different altitudes, supplying water and HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) to extreme elevations, safety procedures, rescue procedures and dealing with high speed air currents like the jet stream. The capital required for construction will be very large. Basically, a space elevator is possible but not yet practical. One final point is how you would justify its construction when it would actually be cheaper to just take the space shuttle.

My understanding is that the strongest materials known to man fail under their own weight due to the tension of holding up several mile of cable, let alone the counter mass, wind and payloads.

Not yet. We haven't developed the technology to engineer the tether yet. Currently the cost of producing Carbon Nanotubes is so expensive that they cost more than gold.
