well ...dogs....all of'em are cool and cute...

but my extreme favorite is: German Shepard.....

you know they have the cutest puppies and they are only aggressive when it is required like in case of theft or something like that... they aren't that type of dog that just sit around in the house and neither let you sleep nor ur neighbours........

and another thing......

for me, they are one of the very few dog species that has to offer size and cuteness at the same time..... and mind you they can be pretty lethal when needed.............!

the other one i can thing of is Labrodor.....

but i recommend strongly German Shepard coz of personal experience....

and in case if you do decide to get a German Shepard......make sure it is the youngest possible.... coz i know no one would like to miss even a sec with a German Shepard puppy.....

See two different sides of a German Shepards here:

Read, read..... read all you can about the medium/small size dogs that are out there. Cover all the breeds; sporting, working, guard, toys, etc.. Then go to your local shelter and look for a dog that either is the breed you want or is mixed w/ that breed. You say you want an energetic dog, make sure you look at all the dogs. Personally i would look for a dog that is calm and submissive in it's crate. Most dogs that are in this state, come out of it when they /you build trust. A hyper dog in it's crate may only be at level 1 in the shelter but, when you get it home may take off to level 5 oops! that might be a mistake. Look for a dog 1-3 years old. If you decide to look at a pure breed buy from a reputable breeder in your area and always, always ask to see the Mom and Dad if the two are available. Study the two dogs and make sure they have a good demeanor. good luck

Your best bet is to research the breeds to see what will fit nicely with your family. Energetic dogs are great, IF you are going to take the time and energy yourself to accomodate that energy level. We got a Border Collie this past summer, but we didn't do this without careful consideration first. This is a smart energetic breed and that can be their downfall as well with some owners. We decided if we were getting such a breed, that we absolutely needed to persue proper obedience training and then we are going on to Agility this spring so as to have a sport to channel her energy and intelligence in to. With this breed, if you don't keep them mentally stimulated (daily walk simply not enuf) and well excercised, they become bored and will find ways to entertain themselves. That self entertainment often results in destruction inside the home.

Just make sure you have a game plan for an energetic breed of dog if you get one. Otherwise, that energy could cause you a world of problems in the long run.

There are alot of energetic medium size breeds.
One breed that fits that descprition exactly would be the Australian Shepherd. You can learn more about the breed at asca.org.
If you decide on an Aussie and want breeder recommendations, contact me.

I rescued my dog from the pound. He is now 131 pounds and the biggest baby I have ever seen. He is so smart too. He will swap you his bone for what you have, and if you give him what you have, he will take back his bone when he is finished with what you gave him. I call it his bargain bone. LOL Muts seem to be so much more intelligent, more even tempered than pure breds. I have owned several pure breds and the muts are my favorite. You can't pick your dogs master, he does. No matter if it is pure bred or not. If this is for your son, he will have to feed and water it and let it outside or take for long walks. If he doesn't he will obey mostly the one who does, and that person will be his master. I hope you will think strongly about adopting a pet from a shelter. They have all sizes and breeds, sometimes even pure breds.

Summer, before you go spending money, why not take your child to your local animal sheltr, adult dogs are alot easier and unlike alot of people think, the dogs there are approved for socialization and are very needy and make wonderful and thankful pets...I have had 4 dogs from the shelter and 2 pure breds (I adopted them too) and I will take the shelter mutt any day....chances are a dog will choose him...have a shelter cat now and she relaly did choose me...please just check there first, it is worth the trip and what a great lesson for your child...it is just my opinion but you get to walk them and know them first...it'll be a fun day for you both...good luck...

Australian Sheppard is perfect for 14 year old. They're plafull, very intelligent and trainable, and on top of it all, they're somewhat crazy & quarky. They're on the top end of the medium size of dog, but they're pretty easy to take care of if you get them obedience classes early on.

They can sleep in snow with their thick winter coats and love big yards though. Not a good dog if they don't get out to run around loose every day.

I have a parsons terrier which is kind of like a jack russell but with longer legs and a cuter face. He is really active and playful and they are quite easy to train. Go on google search and type into images parsons terrier and have a look.

Hope i was a help... From chelski
