To be completely honest, I lived in Europe for a year and a half and I always found that some of the best food ever was found from some of the street vendors. Look for one that looks clean and has a smell that makes your mouth water and buy it. You'll spend alot less and the food is generally REALLY good.

As to Venice, street vendors are alot less common and it's easy to get lost on back streets (or even main streets). I would suggest springing a little more money and eating at one of the more popular (and pricey) restaurants in central areas like St Marcos square. When I went we actually brought sandwiches we'd gotten while in Aviano and just sat on the steps of a midievil church enjoying the food.

Food in Venice is notoriously bad as it caters to the tourist crowd. If you ask the hotel for a recommendation make sure to specify that you are looking for someplace locals would eat or they will send you the restaurant with whom they have an agreement and the food will be no better than what you could find at home. You may want to try Osteria alla Botte. It is casual, the food is typical Venetian fare and it is excellent.

I think Venice is one of the best places in Italy for fish, seafood and vegetables.

Not cheap (forget this word in Venice) but locals go there, and I always eat there when I'm in Venice:

ALLA MADONNA
S.Polo, 594 Rialto
30125 Venezia
tel.+39-041-5223824

SORA AL PONTE
S.Polo, 1588 ponte delle beccarie
30125 Venezia
tel.+39-041-718208

both nearby Rialto; fish and seafood.

Not to be missed, even if just for looking, they are lovely and lively: fruit and vegetables street market (vegetables from lagoon isles have a very good reputation) and fish market in Rialto.
