Reagan didn't know that the mike was turned on when he made this remark, but it got out over the air.
He later excused himself by saying that he was joking.
Is this any way for a presidnet to joke?
Does anybody have any links?

OK, it was "5" minutes, and why do we have to go to the BBC to get the true facts?

Is this what you are talking about?
One of the most famous examples of a gaffe caught on tape was former US President Ronald Reagan's warm-up joke before a radio broadcast.
During the sound check he announced: "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."
The tape was running and the announcement was leaked to the press, sparking an international furore.

no offense and peace be with him, i do have respect for the dead, but he was a horrible president! he might have been popular, but he economics were deadly to so many small businesses. the trickle down effect does not work. I'm all for free market capitalism, but there has to be some governmental control so things like the standard oil monopoly don't happen again, and he was setting it up so that it could.
plus, he was an actor, not saying that actors aren't intelligent, but he was a puppet. I'm sure some of his policies were his, but i hate to think how many weren't.

That was over 20 years ago... I think the country has moved on.
But while he excused it as a joke the fact remains he probably said it knowing the mike was on, just to keep the pressure up. Shortly afterwards Russia threw in the towel because they knew they could never keep up with Reagan's resolve to bankrupt them.

President Regan probably saved America after 4 years of Jimmy (checkbook) Carter. None of the presidents we have had since were capable of the job that President Regan did.

Thanks for the chuckle. Haven't thought about that in yars.
Who really cares if it was any way for a president to talk? He was a great man who did great things. So he had a sense of humor? I'll bet you've said worse, I certainly have.

I remember that but why do you still care? Time to deal with current issues.
