Not the fault of US Fliers but the fault of Air craft manufacturers who always thought Bigger is Better and Beautiful.F-100-F111 or F4 Phantoms were no match for agile MIG 21s.If F16 was there the things could have been different may be the war could have been won.
To Darryl...Yes some of them were the victims of SAMs but probably only around big cities like Hanoi but the cat and mouse game was with MIGS and Russian pilots.Ask Sen McCain I think he is in best position to answer this question.

It doesn't really matter. We learned nothing and are trying to fight a WW11 war in the 21 century, with leaders still in the 20th century.

To DR. 'O' I was always under the impression that it was
SAMS that shot down the majority of our downed fighters!

this site will tell you how many fixed wing losses were suffered in combat over north vietnam.
it doesnt count helicopters or losses suffered over non-hostile areas.
