I'm not a smoker, I just hung out with some associates who couldn't not smoke so I was with them for half an hour taking in the second hand smoke, it wasn't til I left that I started coughing.

What can I do to reduce the effects of that event? Like food? Exercise? Or something?

You are probably still breathing in smoke if you are still coughing.

You need to shower. Wash your hair thoroughly and scrub everything. Wash your clothes. And send your coat and hat out to be dry cleaned. If you can't wash/dry clean your clothes immediately, put them in a garbage bag and tie it up so that it is air tight.

Once the source of the irritation is removed, you should start to get better.

I don't believe there is anything you can do. Your lungs will recover, they were not exposed for very long. Even a smoker's lungs will recover after years of not smoking.

If you're worried about second hand smoke (which it's good that you are), then don't hang around them if they're going to smoke! Stand away from them, upwind if you can, at least.

Oh good grief you are kidding are you that indoctrinated with the smoking nazis you think your not over the incident? If you were in any smoke filled room you would cough and then you leave and your lungs clear out in no time, your fine. If you think you are not ask your doctor to xray your lungs.

See a shrink. Apparently the mental effects have far outlasted the physical effects.
