There are three sources to locate legitimate government grants. First, there is the FAFSA website which will tap into federal and state financial aid for college. Second, the federal government has a searchable database at Grants.gov. Finally, most states have a search for state grants at their state government website which can be located by searching at Yahoo.com and Google.com.

You need to inquire directly to the agency involved. In other words, if you're looking for a grant for individual graduate studies, you start with the Department of Education.
I write grants, and I'll give you a valuable piece of advice: don't depend on the federal government; federal grants are exceptionally difficult to obtain. Start with your state government, and inquire through your local representative or senator. They'll tell you what funds are available and how to go about applying for them.
You'd also do well to inquire of private industry. WalMart, for instance, spends good money funding local organizations and entities. P & C does as well, Sears does... You can learn about these by going to the manager of the local outlet and asking him/her where to write. Quite a few companies have this information available on their web pages.
Just be prepared for disappointment if you go for federal money. And be aware that with the vast expenditures necessitated by the current "war on terror" a lot less money is going to be available for other projects...and that's not likely to change within the next several years as the feds pay off this massive war debt.

Go to your state.gov and follow links or try federal.gov? Maybe you'll have some luck. Have you tried a guidance counselor, somrtimes they have lists that get you directly to an office or site.
